Political relations

Until 1990, between Romania and Israel visits at the level of heads of state took place, the presence of some leaders of mark such as Golda Meir, Menahem Begin and others in Romania being worthy of note.
The first contact at the level of presidents took place in September 1991, through the visit of the state of Israel of mister Ion Iliescu.
During the period 3-5th of January 2000, President Emil Constantinescu paid a visit of the state in Israel.

The President of Romania met with Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, prime-ministers of the State of Israel, with the occasion of the OSCE reunions on 2-3rd of December 1996, at Lisbon and, respectively, 19-20th of November 1999, at Istanbul.
On the 27th of January 2005, the presidents of the two states met in Poland, with the occasion of attending the ceremonies of commemoration of 60 years from the absolution of the Auschwitz internment camp.

From 31 mai to 2 iunie 2009, the President of Romania, Mr. Traian Băsescu, paid a state visit to Israel, at the invitation of President Shimon Peres. During the visit, the President of Romania met with his counterpart, Mr. Shimon Peres, with the Speaker of the Knesset Reuven Rivlin and with the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

At the invitation of the Romanian president, Mr. Shimon Peres, President of Israel, paid a state visit to Romania bewteen 11-13 august 2010, the first visit of an israeli head of state to Romania. During the visit, Mr. Shimon Peres had meetings with teh President of Romania, the prime minister and with the presidents of the two chambers of Parliament. 

In the period between January 19-21, 2014, President Traian Băsescu visited the State of Israel and met with his Israeli counterpart and a series of high-level officials.

In March 6-11, 2016, President Klaus Werner Iohannis paid an state visit to Israel. 

Exchanges of official visits took place between the two countries, at the level of prime-ministers, in Romania and Israel, in 1972, 1977, 1985 and 1987 and, respectively, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2014, 2017.

During the period 14-16th of March 2005, there took place the official visit to Jerusalem of mister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, Prime-minister of Romania, on the occasion of the inauguration of a new wing of the Yad VaShem Memorial in Jerusalem.

On 24 November 2011, the first intergovernmental consultations between Romania and israel took place in Jerusalem. The two delegations were lead by prime ministers Emil Boc and Benjamin Netanyahu. The Romanian delegation includes Minister of Economy, Trade and Business Environment Ion Ariton, Minister of Environment and Forests Laszlo Borbely, Minister of Regional Development and Tourism Elena Udrea, Minister of Education, Research, Youth and Sports Daniel Funeriu, Minister of Health Ladislau Ritli, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Valeriu Tabara, as well as the Government's Secretary General, Daniela Andreescu. On that occasion, the two prime ministers signed a joint declaration of the Romanian and Israeli governments regarding priorities for short and medium term cooperation. At the same time, four Romanian-Israeli cooperation documents were also signed: a joint declaration between Israeli's interior minister and Romania's minister of labour, family affairs and social security; a memorandum of understanding between Romania's Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports and the Vad Yashem Institute of Jerusalem, with support from the Israeli Ministry of Education; and a statement of intent between the environmental ministers of the two countries and a cooperation plan in healthcare and medicine between the healthcare ministries of the two countries.

The second round of intergovernmental consultations took place in June 23-24, 2014, in Jerusalem. The delegations were lead by Mr. Victor Ponta, Prime Minister of Romania and Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of the State of Israel. 14 bilateral documents were signed on that occasion. 

In April 1994, Shimon Peres, Vice-prime-minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel, paid an official visit to Romania and attended the works of the Crans-Montana Forum in Bucharest.

Ehud Olmert, Vice-prime-minister and Minister of Commerce, Industry and Labour, visited Romania during the period 8-9th of February 2003, on the occasion of the first meeting at the level of experts of the Mixed Committee for The Free Trade Agreement. During the period 25-26th of May 2005, the Israeli official, currently prime-minister (elected on the 4th of May 2006), came back to Romania with the occasion of attending the “Forum of cooperation in the domain of technique, informatics and communication between Romania and Israel”.

In 1975, 1978, 1983, 1994 and 2000, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Israel visited Romania, and in 1974, 1988, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 the Romanian correspondents paid official visits to Israel.

During the period 18-24th of May 2006, there took place the official visit to Israel of the Secretary of State Theodor Baconschi, coordinator of the Department of Global Affairs.

A delegation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, lead by the secretary of state coordinator of the Department for Relations with the Worldwide Romanians, paid a work visit to Israel, during the period 25th of February – 3rd of March 2007.
At Bucharest, on the 7th of June 2007, the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Adrian Cioroianu, met with the Minister of Social Affairs from Israel, Yitzak Herzog, present in Bucharest to attend the OSCE Conference regarding the fighting of discrimination and the promotion of mutual respect and understanding.

In the context of the anniversary of 60 years of uninterrupted diplomatic relations, Mr. Majalee Whbee, deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs paid a visit to Romania (May 2008), and Mr. Anton Niculescu, Secretary of State paid a visit to Israel (June 2008).

Between 2-4 November 2008, MP Mircea Geoană, Chairman of the Foreing Affairs Committee of the Romanian Parliament and president of the Social Democratic Party paid a visit to israel.

Between 24-26 October 2009, the State Secretary for Global Affairs Doru Costea paid a visit to Israel. 

Between 14-16 April 2010, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Lieberman visited Romania at the invitation of his couterpart. 
The Minister of Public Security, Yitzhak Aharonovitch, visited Romania between 13-16 June 2010.

Lucian Isar, Minister Delegate for the Business Environment paid a visit to Israel between 10-11 July 2012. On that occasion, Mr. Isar had meetings with Shalom Simhon, Minister of Industry, Trade and Labour, and with important local businessmen.
